If you do not claim credit for tax already deducted or paid in advance, you may pay the same tax twice. Credits are claimed in the e-Return Ledger.
Step 1: Open the ledger
In Tax & Payment, answer Yes to having paid source, advance or regular tax, then Yes to updating payment status.
Step 2: Choose the right option
| Type of payment | Menu option |
|---|---|
| Tax deducted at source | Claim source tax |
| Advance tax | Claim AIT |
| Tax paid with the return | Tax paid with return |
| Excess tax from an earlier year | Adjustment of tax return |
Step 3: Enter source tax details
Select the purpose of deduction, then the deductor’s name, challan number, date, bank and branch. If you hold a certificate instead of a challan, enter its reference or memo number and date.
Step 4: Amounts, the part people get wrong
- Challan/Certificate amount: the full amount on the challan or certificate
- Claimed amount: your own share of it
If the challan is for you alone, both figures are the same. If one challan covers several people (for example, tax deducted from all employees’ salaries), enter the full total first and only your share as the claimed amount.
Step 5: Advance tax
For regular advance tax, enter the challan details under AIT. For vehicle advance tax, use AIT on Car and enter the Transaction ID printed at the top right of the bank slip.
Step 6: Check and return
Check every entry against your papers; incorrect details can make the return incomplete or inaccurate. Then go to Tax Payment Status and click Go to Return.
